Summer Overnight Camps

Summer Overnight Camps

YMCA Camp Wapsie Overnight Summer Camps are for ages 6-17. We offer nine – one-week sessions, each with a different theme. The daily program consists of 20+ activities, and the flexible schedule allows campers to explore new adventures or develop skills in an already familiar area. Our mature and caring staff provides a safe and fun environment where children can challenge themselves while learning new skills in an outdoor environment.

Through Wapsie’s coed program, campers build lifelong friendships and memories while growing in confidence and independence and building personal skills. Programs built around fun and character development are designed to give different age groups the optimum experience and tie into their interests and abilities.

Camp Wapsie has something for everyone, from adventurous canoeing on Oxbow Lake to laid-back stargazing, lying in a hammock at Wapsie’s Hammock Village. The athlete, the explorer, the leader, the artist, and everyone in between can find their adventure at Camp Wapsie. With a 6-to-1 camper-to-counselor ratio, we provide exceptional supervision.
Our Camp experience is rich in tradition and often referred to as the Camp Wapsie “Magic.” We instill the core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility into all that we do. Campers will gain independence, self-confidence, lifelong friendships, positive memories, and a home they can come back to.

Please see our 2024 Family Handbook for information on programming, preparation tools, and other policies before registering.

Cabin Campers (entering 4-10 grade)

In our most popular program, participants sleep in 12-bed cabins with two counselors in an adjoining room. Participants of similar gender and age stay in cabins with showers and bathrooms. A college-age Senior Counselor and a Junior Counselor supervise and guide participants through the week. Group living develops community and social skills while creating lifelong friendships and memories.

Participants can choose from an array of staff-led activities each morning. Afternoons and evenings are often spent in cabin groups doing things such as all camp games, skits, cookouts, and “Mission Impossible.”

A highlight for older campers is the canoe trip with overnight camping along the Wapsipinicon River.

Ranger (entering 8-10 grade)

Ranger Camp is an adventurous outdoor skills program that allows teenagers a slightly more rugged outdoor experience with opportunities for more hands-on development and practice of skills. Campers stay with their counselors in large, sturdy platform tents with cots. Modern restrooms and showers are available in the main camp area. They participate in some traditional YMCA Camp Wapsie activities and generally function as their own community, working together.

Rangers work on various outdoor living skills during the week, such as food preparation, cooking over a campfire, orienteering, fire-building techniques, basic survival skills and safety, minimum-impact camping, and team building. Counselors work with the campers to pick some of their activity choices. Rangers also get to swim, join other Wapsie campers for some all-camp activities and campfires and may plan an offsite overnight canoeing or camping trip.

When local water conditions are favorable and safe, staffing is available and positive attitudes are witnessed with our Ranger Campers, the group may take an impromptu canoe trip down the Wapsipinicon River for an overnight or day experience.  This may not be available every week of camp or every year, only when conditions allow.
