On Thursday, February 7th, 2019, the Marion City Council approved an extra $800,000 contribution to its existing $6.5M pledge for a new YMCA community recreation center! This additional commitment allows the project to officially break ground this year. A community recreation center has always been a top need identified by Marion residents. This idea dates all the way back to the Imagin8 community visioning process. As the need continues to grow, the YMCA and the City of Marion have a full partnership where all YMCA and Marion Parks and Rec programs will be held together in one place, enhancing program offerings to the area. This joint partnership within this one facility is also the most cost-effective option to address the needs of the Marion area.
The existing Marion YMCA facility is the oldest building in Marion still serving its original purpose, and cannot accommodate a continuously growing membership base. This new facility will offer over twice the square footage, at nearly 75,000 square feet of fitness, pool, indoor track, racquetball and gym space! This new facility will not only enhance the offerings for residents of Marion and surrounding areas, but will also strengthen the entire Cedar Rapids Metro YMCA Association by being able to accommodate a larger membership base. Increased membership capacity in Marion will allow the YMCA to give back a larger amount to all members and program participants within the entire association, largely contributing to the overall health of the organization.
