- Camp Wapsie
The YMCA Camp Wapsie Leadership Development program fosters leadership growth in high school students and prepares them for future life experiences. The program is divided into two positions, each with an emphasis on building different sets of leadership skills.
Overall Program Goals:
Leader In Training (aka, LIT)
Geared toward high school students entering the 10th or 11th grade, LIT's spend three weeks at YMCA Camp Wapsie developing their leadership skills through a focus on group dynamics. With 14 other program participants, they work on special initiatives, implementation of a service project and work with younger campers while assisting and being mentored by veteran camp counselors. Because of the limited number of spaces in this program spots are filled on an application basis only.
Counselor In Training (aka, CIT)
For students entering 11th and 12th grades, CIT's attend camp for a four-week session to further their experience in leadership, counseling and group work skills. Training sessions coupled with mentoring by counselors and hands-on interactive sessions allow the CIT to begin assisting in cabins and with program activities. Participants also attend lifeguard training and plan /implement a multi-day camping trip as part of their experience. The four week session is capped off with a week-long counseling experience where the CIT’s work in a cabin with the Wapsie counselors.
While prior Camp Wapsie experience is very helpful it is not a requirement to be considered for the Leadership Development Programs. Contact the camp for more information.
