NEW this summer: Wilderness Education Camp

Sixth through tenth graders can participate in this week-long camp focused on outdoor living skills, hunter safety education and wilderness ethics. This camp hosts a certified Hunter Safety course that teaches students basic survival​​​​​​​ and first aid skills, water safety, wildlife identification, basics of wildlife management, hunting laws and firearm/archery safety. Th​​​​​​​is course also stresses the importance of individual responsibility and outdoor ethics, such as leave-no-trace camping. Campers can expect to sleep in new seasonal sleeping structures and participate in camp-wide activities such as campfires and games.

Changing Lives Through Resident Camp

Summer Camp 2017 runs Sunday through Saturday, week-long sessions June through Mid-August. Join us for our Open House May 7 from 1-4 p.m.

YMCA Camp Wapsie strives to provide a safe and fun environment where children can challenge themselves while learning new skills in an outdoor environment. Though Wapsie’s coed program, campers build lifelong friendships and memories while growing in confidence, independence and building personal skills. Programs built around fun and character development are designed to give different age groups the optimum experience and tie into their interests and abilities.

Whether mastering the climbing tower or learning to prepare food over a campfire, campers are encouraged to set goals and try new things.

Camp Themes 2017:

Thursdays are special themed days with activities related to the theme.  Wapsie transforms into another world with special events and themed activities to help campers express their creative side.  Costumes are welcome but not necessary.

TeePee Village (1st Grade - 3rd Grade)

Youth entering 1st-3rd grades participate in structured, age appropriate activities with a 1-to-6 counselor-to-camper ratio to provide this age group with the security and support they need for a successful week long camping experience. They sleep in canvas teepees, built on wooden platforms in their own area with a playground and natural play area. Care is taken to insure that campers are protected in inclement weather. 

Teepee Village campers begin the week participating in activities in groups. Though the week they gain more independence in participating in more activities available to older campers.

Tee-Pee Village 1/2 Week Description:

Wapsie offers half-week sessions for campers who want a shorter first trip to camp during week 4 only. Half-week campers coming on Sunday check in between 3:00pm and 3:30pm and leave after Wednesday’s 9:00am parents program. Wednesday campers check in at 4:00pm and leave after Saturday’s 9:00am parents program. They experience any of the traditional activities in a shortened time frame.

Cabin Camp (4th Grade - 10th Grade)

Campers entering 4th - 10th grades are Cabin Campers, our Traditional Overnight camp program. Campers of the same age and gender stay in cabins with bathrooms and showers. A college-age Senior Counselor and a Junior Counselor supervise and guide the cabin of 12 children through the camp experience.

During the morning, campers choose from a wide range of staff-led self-development activities. Afternoon and evening programs include group activities, such as games, skits, campfires, dances, "Mission Impossible", cookouts, and much more. A highlight for the older campers is the overnight canoe trip down the Wapsipinicon River.

Horseback Lessons  for Cabin Campers

Horseback riding instruction is available to cabin campers for a fee and must be registered for when registering for camp. Five one-hour riding classes are assigned according to level of ability. We also offer daily, a half-hour "Noon Ride" by sign up at camp.

Basketball Clinics for Cabin Campers

During the summer we offer a basketball clinic. Special instructors that will lead, daily clinics, on designated weeks, to teach and practice skills. The clinic runs during part of morning activities. It is a great way for kids interested in sports to keep up on a bit of practice over the summer while still getting to enjoy the majority of camps activities.

Ranger Camp (8th Grade - 11th Grade)

Ranger Camp is an adventurous outdoor summer program. The program allows 8th though 11th graders who want slightly more rugged experience with opportunities for more in-depth development of outdoor living skills. Campers stay with their counselors in large, sturdy, platform tents. They participate in some traditional YMCA Camp Wapsie activities, but function as their own community, working together.

Rangers work on various outdoor living skills during the week, such as food preparation and cooking over a campfire; orienteering; fire-building techniques; basic survival skills and safety; minimum-impact camping; and team building. Rangers also get a chance to ride horses, swim, and plan offsite, overnight camping trips.
